What is a meme?
Internet meme is an image, video, piece of text, etc., mostly funny in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users (“a viral meme”), often with small modifications.
An image-based meme accompanied with the right words is a powerful and effective way of expressing a personal attitude about something.
The word "meme" is first introduced by Richard Dawkins(evolutionary biologist) in 1976, and comes from the Greek word "mimema" (meaning "something imitated"). He described memes as a being a form of cultural propogation, a way for people to transmit social memories and cultural ideas to each other.
The Internet, with its variety of communication channels, especially with its sociable communication tools is an ideal media for spreading the memes.
The larger part of internet memes is humorous or shock-value (provokes a reaction of sharp disgust, shock, anger,...) in nature as these grab people’s attention immediately in contrast to deeper meme content: intellectual or philsophical. Humor usually reaches the most people, and is the most attractive to forward to others.
